FOND DU LAC COUNTY - The 9-point buck would have made a fine buck tale on its own. But this story is made by the woman who bagged him, 90-year-old Delores Wilhelms of the town of Forest.
"You go out hunting and fishing and they say, 'where's the lady in you? Why don't you go shopping?' Well, I don't like shopping," said Wilhelms.
The trophy buck crossed the sights of her and her crossbow Monday night.
"I've never seen one so big so close," she said. "I said oh my god, and you know you're supposed to be quiet...so I picked up my bow, aimed it, and bingo."
It takes about 50 pounds of tension to load Wilhelms' bow, so bagging her buck came with a little help. Since her husband of 67 years passed away, Wilhelms has been hunting with her neighbor, Ron Haessly, on his land for the past two seasons.
"I tell my wife I'm going to have the other woman over and go bow hunting with me," said Haessly.
Wilhelms' passion has raised a few eyebrows.
"A lot of people say I'm crazy," she said. "You know what? I say if they're talking about me, at least they're leaving someone else alone."
A passion she says she will not give up until she has no other choice.
"I love it," she said. "It's all the stuff that God gives you for free. You can sit in the moonlight, sit in the woods, it doesn't cost."
