High school football poll debuts

GREEN BAY, Wis. - Rankings, everybody loves rankings, especially when it comes to sports. Football polls, basketball polls, everybody likes to see who’s No. 1, and then fans can talk and wonder why this team is slotted so high while some other team is nowhere to be found.

So, since we’re one week deep into the high school football season, here’s my debut football poll for the 2010 season.

The poll includes FOX 11’s coverage area and has been divided into two polls – Large School (Divisions 1-3) and Small School (Divisions 4-7).

Topping the inaugural polls are Appleton North in the Large School and Kewaunee in the Small School.

Large School (Divisions 1-3)

1. Appleton North (1-0): Top-ranking on the line as Lightning goes on the road. This week: at Menasha.
2. Menasha (1-0): After 52-14 win at Oshkosh North, Bluejays ready to grab top spot. This week: host Appleton North.
3. Ashwaubenon (1-0): QB Austin Kassner opens big with 4 TD passes. This week: host De Pere.
4. West De Pere (1-0): Phantoms took care of Seymour in Week 1. This week: at Denmark.
5. Fond du Lac (1-0): RB Miles Groeschel one to watch this season. This week: at Appleton West.
6. Notre Dame (1-0): Tritons scored all kinds of ways in blowout win over De Pere. This week: at Manitowoc.
7. Bay Port (1-0): Pirates get by Sheboygan South in opener. This week: host Green Bay Preble.
8. Pulaski (1-0): Red Raiders thumped Manitowoc on the road last week. This week: at Sheboygan South.
9. New London (1-0): C.J. Anderson (243 yards) runs all over Oconto Falls in win. This week: Host Marinette.
10. Green Bay East (1-0): East takes care of Green Bay West, impressively, 41-6. This week: host Green Bay Southwest.

Small School (Divisions 4-7)

2. Xavier (1-0): Statement win in Week 1 against Waupaca. This week: at Winnebago Lutheran Academy.
3. Winneconne (1-0): Wolves blank Berlin in opener. This week: Host Fox Valley Lutheran (Thursday).
4. St. Mary’s Springs (1-0): Ledgers smoke Mayville in opener, 34-0. This week: at Lomira.
5. Brillion (1-0): Four players top 55 yards in season-opening win. This week: at Manitowoc Lutheran.
6. Ripon (1-0): Ben Wetzel gets new-look Tigers off to good start. This week: at Berlin.
7. Winnebago Lutheran Academy (1-0): WLA starts strong with 21-2 win. This week: host Xavier.
8. Peshtigo (1-0): Bulldogs overcome slow start to beat Oconto, 21-6. This week: at Bonduel.
9. Roncalli (1-0): A 59-0 victory to open season not a bad way start. This week: host Hilbert.
10. Suring: Eagles flying high after 49-0 win. This week: at Crandon.
