PHOENIX - John Axford would like a Valentine's Day with no surprises.
The day that millions of people around the world use to show their love and affection for a significant other has been nothing but trouble for the Brewers closer.
"I've had a curse coming into spring training four years in a row now," Axford said. "In 2010 on Valentine's Day I got into a 50-car pileup in Nebraska so I got held up there for a couple of days."
But the bad run doesn't end there.
"2011 I got food poisoning on Valentine's Day and lost about 12 pounds in one day. Then February 12th [2012], so two days before Valentine's Day, I tried to travel to spring training and got held up. I couldn't leave because my son wasn't allowed into the country because he didn't have a passport, even though he's an American and we were trying to get into America. This year I'm hoping to avoid something, so far so good."
Axford is of Canadian descent, so he ran in to issues when he tried to cross the border with his son in February of 2012, despite the fact the boy was born in America and is an American citizen.
The rest of the Brewers players report for spring training on Friday, with the team's first full-squad workout scheduled for Saturday.
