MARYVALE, Ariz. (AP) - Jedd Gyorko hit his second homer of the spring, a two-run shot that helped the San Diego Padres beat a Milwaukee Brewers split-squad 7-1 Monday.
A 2010 second-round pick out of West Virginia, Gyorko has eight RBIs in his first four games. He is trying to win the Padres' second base job, which would allow Logan Forsythe to move to third base.
Kyle Blanks and Mark Kotsay each had two of San Diego's 10 hits. Catcher Eddy Rodriguez added a three-run homer in the ninth.
In a possible World Baseball Classic pitching matchup, Milwaukee's Hiram Burgos, faced San Diego starter Edinson Volquez. Burgos, who will play for Puerto Rico, allowed the homer to Gyorko in 2 2-3 innings with two strikeouts. Dominican right-hander Volquez allowed two hits and struck out four in two scoreless innings.
