VALPARAISO, IN (AP) - The Green Bay Phoenix needed a last-second 3 to move on, but their NCAA Tournament hopes are alive, beating Illinois-Chicago 64-63 in the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals. They will face top-seeded Valparaiso in Saturday evening's conference semifinals.
Tied late, Phoenix point guard Kiefer Sykes fouled UIC's Gary Talton on a jump shot. Talton made both free throws, giving Green Bay the ball with :07 on the clock. Sykes raced the ball up the court and, with head coach Brian Wardle calling timeout just behind him, junior guard Sultan Muhammad hit a three with just over :01 on the clock.
The Phoenix face the Crusaders on Valpo's home floor Saturday with a 7:30pm tip time. Green Bay lost both regular season meetings to the Crusaders.
