ASHWAUBENON - Nearly 40,000 people moved through the Resch Center turnstiles during last week's girls state high school basketball tournament.
PMI Entertainment, which manages the Resch Center, says the official attendance was 39,825. Individuals who attended more than one session were counted more than once.
PMI officials said they were hoping to draw about 34,000 fans in the tournament's first year in Ashwaubenon. Last year's attendance at the Kohl Center in Madison was around 30,000. Until this year, the tournament had been held in Madison every year since its inception in 1976.
PMI has a two-year contract with the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association to host the tournament at the Resch Center. The WIAA has not decided where tournaments will be held after 2014.
