Appleton - Cami Dahl “Some people don’t understand it, but I guess it’s just a DECA thing.”
The largest club at Appleton East has more than 100 student participants and it’s open to any student that is in a business or marketing class. Its called DECA
Keegan O’Brian Coordinator for DECA--"DECA is an association of marketing students its kind of three fold here at Appleton East they do competitions, we do social activities, and we also do a lot of community service"
Sarah Stringham: We did a senior prom for residents at a nursing home – that was our big project last year that was a huge hit.
Maggie Rufe: It was so fun! They were all dancing and the guys were wearing tuxes and we were wearing dresses – it was great to dance with them and play bingo.
In about 8 years DECA has raised
Andy Dodge: A little over $30,000
Some student choose to participate in DECA competitions
Ben Moy: we pick a category based on our career path, I guess, and we do two tests, one of which is just a general economic test and the other is a test based on our category.
Maria: How do you guys go into competition – with groups or by yourself?
Mike: I’ve done it with a partnership and by myself. And they have their own quirks and they’re both a lot of fun
Maria: how do you think DECA is going to help you after high school?
Alyssa Johnson: I think it’s definitely going to help with job interviews
What’s been their favorite part?
Andy Dodge: Definitely the polar plunge. Jump into a freezing pit of water – and you have no clue how cold water can get and not freeze, but it’s for a great cause.
Maria: How cold can water get and not freeze?
Andy: Well, scientifically, 32 degrees, but I think it’s a lot colder. (laughs)
