LITTLE CHUTE - Last week, Little Chute scored 61 points in a Division 4 Level 2 win at Sturgeon Bay and now the Mustangs face conference rival Freedom in the GameTime Game of the Week on Friday.
Little Chute has one of the best offenses in the area, but guess which team held the Mustangs to their lowest point total of the season? That's right, Freedom.
In Week 3, Little Chute managed a 13-6 win at Freedom, but since then Little Chute's offense has took off. The Mustangs, seeded No. 2, have averaged about 47 points per game since and the reason for the high scoring is balance.
The Mustangs have 28 touchdown passes, 22 rushing touchdowns.
"We have a lot of options,” said Little Chute quarterback Mitch Ciske, who has thrown for 1,416 yards. “This year our line has been blocking great and we just have a lot of open things and are taking advantage of them."
Tyler Zak leads the Mustangs (9-1) with 763 rushing yards as Little Chute has compiled 1,753 rushing yards.
"I think I ran the numbers,” coach Greg Enz said. “We're like 52-48 (percent run-pass) or 51-49. A lot of that has to do with the fact the kids are very confident in what they do, the coaches do a good job in preparation and it allows us the flexibility to run or throw."
Little Chute knows in order to move on to Level 4, it's high-powered offense will have to continue to score against Freedom. Considering how Freedom played Little Chute the first time and is playing now, that will be a challenge.
Enz, though, believes the offense has to continue scoring.
"I think so,” he said. “I think from a confidence standpoint, but at some point the teams get better. Freedom's going to be better than the last two teams (we played)."
Not only is a trip to Level 4 or the state semifinals at stake Friday, so is bragging rights. It’s not often a team gets to play its main rival twice in the same season, let alone in the playoffs, and Enz knows this game will have extra “mustard.”
“We try to tell the kids it’s just another game,” Enz said. “In reality, it’s not. The stage gets bigger and hopefully they can keep balance in how they approach just as much as Freedom’s doing the same thing.”
