ASHWAUBENON - Alex Flucke is the two-time reigning Division 1 girls champion in the pole vault and before the senior from Ashwaubenon embarks on a road to a three-peat she made it official Wednesday where she’ll be going to college.
Flucke signed a national letter of intent and will be taking her talents to the University of Minnesota.
“It’s exciting to be committed to college,” Flucke said. “I’m excited to get to a college and vault.”
Flucke picked Minnesota over Indiana, South Florida, New Mexico and Wisconsin.
“I like the coaches, the atmosphere; they were so welcoming,” Flucke said. “I won’t feel like a little freshman coming in, it’ll feel like family.”
Flucke already has family at Minnesota as her sister Melissa is finishing her senior season as she competes in the long jump. Flucke won’t compete with her sister, but said she’s happy with where she is going.
“It’s been really hard work, but it’s obviously paid off because I’m going to my dream school,” Flucke said. “There’s been ups and downs with any sport. It’s all been worth it.”
Flucke won the pole vault last season with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches, which ties her for the state record. Flucke did clear 12-10 at regionals last season but state records can only be recorded at the state meet.
