De Pere plays Milwaukee Vincent on Thursday

GREEN BAY - The Holiday season runs through this weekend, but there are some basketball tournaments to keep an eye on locally.

Some of the best boys and girls basketball teams will be in action locally. At the Kress Events Center on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the Shawano Sundrop Shootout takes place Thursday and Friday and among the boys teams there are De Pere, Seymour, Green Bay Southwest and NEW Lutheran.

De Pere is ranked No. 3 in this week’s FOX 11 Top 11 poll, while Seymour is No. 5 and NEW is No. 6. Southwest has been ranked this season. De Pere has an interesting contest Thursday night when it plays undefeated Milwaukee Vincent.

Meanwhile, West De Pere and Ashwaubenon are hosting girls basketball tournaments this week and the Packerland Conference’s best teams will look to win titles. Algoma, ranked No. 7 this week, is at the Ashwaubenon tournament, and No. 8 Kewaunee is at the West De Pere tournament.

Also, De Pere, showed why it remains No. 1 in the FOX 11 Top 11 after beating two ranked teams last week inside of 24 hours. The reigning Division 1 state champion Redbirds beat Manitowoc and Algoma both on the road to run their winning streak to 28 games.

Looking Back at Games of the Week

  • Boys: Last week, Neenah held on to beat Kaukauna, 63-60, and what stood out was Neenah’s real good. Center Matt Heldt (6 feet 10 inches) has nice game around the basket and help on the perimeter. The Rockets will be tough to beat in the FVA.
  • Girls: Oshkosh West and Appleton North are two contenders in the FVA teams this season, but last week’s game was key in that the loser would fall three games behind Kimberly. West did it its way, playing great defense and holding on till the end for a 30-28 win.
