GREEN BAY - Green Bay Southwest has won all 10 games they’ve played this season but it hasn’t always been easy.
Each of the Trojans last 3 games have been decided by one score including their thrilling Level 2 win over Pulaski. It included a late 4 th down stand and a defensive stop on the Red Raiders late two point conversion try that would have tied the game.
Senior Linebacker Jarrod Thill said described the defenses mindset prior to the game preserving play. "You know we all got in the huddle took a deep breath and said they ain't getting it," said Thill.
Thill made an outstanding play to turn away the two point conversion attempt and the Trojans lived to fight another day. Coach Bryce Paup said it all goes back to their mantra of only focusing on winning the next play.
"You can't worry about the scoreboard unless you take care of the next play and the kids have done a great job of buying into that," Paup said.
They'll have their hands full with a Homestead team that's produced a number of next level talents and brings a big, physical club to Green Bay.
“They're not fancy,” said Paup. They're very disciplined and they can almost lull you to sleep but then all the sudden the boring gets out the gate on ya."
Southwest will happily play a physical grind it out game. They average over 230 yards per game on the ground and 5 players top 250 rushing yards on the season.
"We like getting down and dirty in the trenches,” Thill said. “They're a power team and hopefully we can bring a little power back at them."
All-Conference Offensive Lineman Max Scharping knows the Southwest run game inside and out and said "Our backs do a good job at getting into the hole and our o-linemen do a good job of blocking. It's really a team effort and we all just pull together and we know we can win."
They know they can, because they did last season, making the Division 2 final 4, but a return trip means something else for the program.
“It would mean a lot to them just to prove hey we weren't one hit wonders,” said Paup.
Thill added, “This is our last home game so we need to leave it all on the field and hope for the best.”
