MADISON - After Friday, only one of Wisconsin’s six wolf hunting zones will be open.
The Department of Natural Resources has closed Wolf Harvest Zone 6 to hunting and trapping. The closure goes into effect at 5 p.m. Friday.
Zone 6, which covers much of the southern two-thirds of the state, is the fifth zone to be closed during this first organized wolf hunt. Only Zone 3 in northwestern Wisconsin remains open.
The harvest quota for Zone 6 was 18 wolves. The 18th was registered Wednesday.
Zone 3 is seven wolves away from hitting its harvest quota.
The wolf hunt started in October and could last as long as February. The DNR’s goal is to reduce the wolf population by 116 animals.
