Corn harvest helps deer hunters

BROWN COUNTY - The corn harvest is actually tied into every season's deer hunt. And this year, it could aid hunters.

The two might not seem like they would have an impact on one another.

But as hunters know, unharvested corn fields can be a real pain come hunting season.

Deer like to hide in standing corn fields because they're not only a source of food, but a source of cover.

On average during the last five years, only about 69 percent of the state's corn would have been harvested by now.

So, deer would still have plenty of cover.

But this year, we're at 94 percent completion for the corn harvest, leaving the deer few fields to take cover in.

And for hunters, that's very good news.

"Absolutely. If you're not wanting to fight with standing corn, soybeans, the only thing you may run into is a few more plowed fields and a bit more chisel plowing done," said Mark Hagedorn, Brown County UW-Extension agriculture agent.
