DNR creates map of open lands

MADISON (AP) - The state Department of Natural Resources has launched a new online map of private land open to public hunting, fishing and other recreational activities.

Landowners enrolled in the DNR's managed forest program get breaks on their property taxes if they enact sustainable timber harvesting, wildlife management and water quality practices. They can get larger breaks if they open at least a portion of their land to recreation.

Gov. Scott Walker directed the DNR earlier this year to create an online map of land open for recreation in response to complaints that parcels were difficult to find.

The map, available at http://dnrmaps.wi.gov/opfl , shows the location of 1.1 million acres open for public use.
