MADISON (AP) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is urging hunters to donate venison to feed the hungry.
In the past 12 years, hunters have donated 80,000 deer that were processed into more than 3.6 million pounds of ground venison. It was distributed to food pantries across the state.
Brad Koele, the DNR's wildlife biologist coordinating the venison program, says the hunters, meat processors and volunteers have been incredibly generous but they need help again this year with donations.
The bow season started Sept. 15, the gun season starts Nov. 17 and the muzzleloader season starts Nov. 26.
A list of participating meat processors and instructions for donating are available on the DNR's website .
