ASHWAUBENON - After Thursday’s first round netted the Green Bay Packers a pass rusher in Nick Perry they hope they can team with Clay Matthews to terrorize quarterbacks starting next season, it appears the Packers have a hole they need to fill at safety, and could that hole be filled during tonight’s second or third round of the NFL Draft?
The Packers, who have the 59th overall pick in the second round and 90th pick in the third round, are in need of a safety after three-time Pro Bowler Nick Collins was released earlier this week because of a neck injury he suffered last season. Without Collins, the Packers’ starting safeties are Morgan Burnett and Charlie Peprah.
Burnett will start but Peprah was shaky last season, which means the Packers could select a safety. Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers talked about the safety position Thursday night.
"As I look at our safeties heading into this year we have more experience,” Capers said. “We have a guy like Charlie Peprah who has played more than 900 plays the last two years and Morgan Burnett started all year for the first time. We really like where he is, we think he can ascend and be a very good player for us."
Capers complimented Burnett but all he could say about Peprah is he played more than 900 plays. In other words, the Packers need a starting-caliber safety and they may find him tonight.
