GREEN BAY - Green Bay’s mayor is reacting to the controversial call by replacement officials at the end of Monday night’s Packers-Seahawks game.
Mayor Jim Schmitt sent a letter Tuesday to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
In the letter Schmitt writes, “As an elected official and public steward, I’m concerned about the impact on the integrity of the game and the significant financial effect that it may have upon our community.”
The league also released a statement Tuesday saying, “The result of the game is final” and the Seahawks won 14-12.
While Schmitt doesn’t ask for the call to be overturned in the letter, he states that he was disappointed with officiating at the end of the game.
Schmitt goes on to write, “Unfortunately, last night’s game creates a negative perception on the NFL brand, which in turn jeopardizes the Packers chance for success as well as the potential to negatively affect our local economy.”
The NFL locked out the regular officials in June after their contract expired. The league and the NFLRA, which covers more than 120 on-field officials, are at odds over salary, retirement benefits and operational issues.
At the end of the letter to Goodell, Schmitt writes, “I believe it is crucial to resolve this dispute as soon as possible to prevent any further deterioration in the National Football League’s product. I urge you to do what you can to bring an end to this conflict between the referees and owners.”
This is the first time the league is using replacements since 2001.
