GREEN BAY - Green Bay Packers player Brandon Underwood has been released on a $1,000 signature bond after his arrest in a domestic incident last month.
Underwood appeared in court Wednesday to face misdemeanor disorderly conduct charges stemming from a June 16 incident in which police were called to Underwood's house. Police said he was arguing with his wife Brandie and ripped a necklace off her neck that she received as part of the Packers Super Bowl ring ceremony that evening.
The couple showed up for the court hearing together. Brandon Underwood declined comment after court, but Brandie talked about the incident and their relationship.
"The last thing I wanted was for him to get in trouble," said Brandie through tears. "I've never been afraid of him. This has been just been blown so out of proportion, it's unbelievable."
According to the criminal complaint, police say Brandie told them Brandon grabbed a hold of her arms with both of his hands, pulled her out of the car, and threw her onto the ground.
Brandie told police she did not want Brandon arrested and that she called them to "stand up for herself." However, state law requires officers to make an arrest involving a domestic abuse report if there if they believe abuse has occurred and could possibly occur again.
"The victim does not have to sign a statement or give their opinion that they want the person arrested," said Lt. Jim Runge with the Green Bay Police Department. "It's really a protection for the victim, so they are not the person who is getting the guy or gal arrested."
The Underwoods are going through divorce proceedings. Brandie says they are trying to work on their marriage by receiving counseling and they are still living together.
Earlier this year Brandon Underwood pleaded no contest to a prostitution charge alleged against him last summer.
Brandon Underwood is due back in court July 15. However, since it is a misdemeanor charge an attorney can appear on his behalf.
The Green Bay Packers say the team is aware of the incident but declined comment.
The NFL says it is also aware of the situation. With the current work stoppage, the league can not take disciplinary action against any player. However, a spokesman said the league will review any potential conduct violations when an agreement is reached.
