GREEN BAY - Packers fans aren't about to forget Donald Driver. But just incase, there will soon be a permanent reminder of him on Green Bay's near west side.
“Well there's no one in the Packer organization more connected with this community than Donald Driver, so we know we wanted to do something for him,” said Jim Schmitt, Green Bay’s mayor.
Schmitt says in about a month, the city council should approve Donald Driver Way. It will take the place of Pearl Street, extending north of Dousman. It's the street where you can find Titletown Brewing Company and the 28-year-old Packers receiver statue.
“Talking with Donald Driver, I think initially we looked around the stadium, but that's his own street in a very unique area with a statue,” said Schmitt. “It's awesome. He's excited about it and so are we.”
Titletown Brewing plans to repaint the 22-foot-tall statue to resemble Driver, including changing the number from 88 to 80.
“It's a lot of painting,” said Brent Weycker, the owner of Titletown Brewing. “The statue is there. We wanted to do some landscaping and we were going to paint it this summer anyway because there's some paint chipping on the backside of it.”
“That shows you the love, that shows you the support, that shows you the dedication for what I have done for this organization and this community that this community would honor me in this same way,” said Driver.
City officials plan to have a ceremony dedicating the street and statue when Driver will be back in the area in June.
Schmitt also gave Driver a key to the city.
Governor Scott Walker also proclaimed Wednesday as Donald Driver Day.
