GREEN BAY - An addition could soon light up the Packers Heritage Trail in downtown Green Bay.
Organizers of the trail that opened last summer announced Tuesday that they hope to build a monument and a recognition wall for sponsors and donors.
Although the trail's beginning is near the Neville Public Museum, this attraction would be located at the corner of Cherry Street and North Washington Street near the team's birthplace.
The monument would include a goalpost, along with statues of Hall of Famers Paul Hornung and Johnny “Blood” McNally.
Glass walls would also be etched with images of Packers through the years.
And at night, the monument will be lit in green.
City and Packers officials say a fundraising drive is already underway to pay the $500,000 cost.
They say it would be a great addition to the community.
"It's just an awesome statement of our commitment to history, our commitment to the Green Bay Packers, really celebrating something that no other community can celebrate,” said Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt.
"To be able to do something that ties downtown Green Bay where there's so much Packers history to the Lambeau experience out at the station, it's just awesome,” said Scott King, Packers Heritage Trail Foundation.
Organizers say they hope to break ground this spring and have it built by summer.
