Thompson drafts for long-term investment

GREEN BAY - Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson is a draft veteran and has his own theories of how to draft.

"You draft for long-term investment of your team. We don't draft for the immediate need," said Thompson.

At least that is the theory, though sometimes it doesn't work out that way.

For example, the Packers needed cornerback help back in 2004. The team, under head coach and general manager Mike Sherman, reached for Ahmad Carroll in the first round. It was a disaster and Carroll was gone in two years.

More recently, with the Packers looking to bolster the defensive line, Justin Harrell went number 16 overall in 2007. His career was short as well.

But Thompson has shown the tendency to trust the board and make his picks, never having a bust of a draft and always able to keep the cupboard full.

"We're pretty deep on our roster, so we don't think we have to stretch for anybody," said Thompson.

"Ted and his entire staff do a great job. I think that's one of the competitive advantages we have, the quality of the people we have that are making those decisions," said Mark Murphy, Packers president and CEO

With one pick on Thursday night, the Packers are hoping the board and the position come together for a successful draft.
