Icy roads cause problems in Shawano County

SHAWANO COUNTY - It was a foggy, rainy, icy start for many drivers as they traveled through slick road conditions on Highway 29 Tuesday morning. Officials said areas west of Shawano experienced dangerous conditions as rain fell in most parts, creating glare ice.

"Looks like a semi got a little stuck," said FOX 11's Emily Deem.

"Ah that was one of seven, that's the last one...actually there's two more up the road," said Sgt. Mike Wizner, Shawano County Sheriff’s Department.

The semi was apart of that group.

Dave Faber has been a truck driver for nine years.

"I was just creeping along and couldn't turn."

He was taking the Wittenberg exit to County Highway Q.

"Went up the hill and there was glare ice...couldn't turn."

Faber's truck went headfirst into the ditch while his trailer blocked the road.

As the morning progressed, the rain stopped and road conditions started to improve.

"It's helping. It's warming up a little bit and like I said the salt on the roads makes it a lot better," said Sgt. Wizner.

And soon, help arrived for many of those stuck... including Faber.

"How do you prepare yourself for going out in condition like this?" asked Emily Deem.

"Test the roads and you drive accordingly," Faber replied.

Something officials agree with.

"If you come up to an accident where there are and type of flashing lights, slow down. Just like I said with the traffic out here...slow down. It's gonna save a whole lot of problems," said Sgt. Wizner.
