Cold air will help to grow ice this week, but that doesn't mean it will be safe to walk on.
Temperatures will stay at or below freezing through the weekend so we will continue to grow ice with these cold temperatures.
The amount of ice growth will also depend on snow cover. We have a chance for light snow on Friday and Saturday (1-2" total). Snow acts to insulate the ice, so ice growth will be limited.
Saturday's forecast is calling for lots of wind and a wind shift during the day. Often times windy conditions with a wind shift leads to large chunks of ice detaching from the main ice sheet and floating off.
If you are going out on the ice this weekend, check with local anglers or bait shops on ice conditions and stay close to shore.
