Snowmobile trail conditions

GREEN BAY - Despite this winter's above average snowfall so far, local snowmobile trails aren't in the best of shape.

Even the month of February itself has seen more snow than average.

But in between snowfalls, we've seen warm spells and rain. Much like the weather we're receiving now. And that's taken its toll on the trails.

Here in Brown County, trails are completely closed. They're also closed in most of Outagamie County, except for the far northwest corner.

According to The State Department of Tourism, you have to head west and north to find widespread trails in good condition.

The trail conditions, in most cases, are not reported by the counties but by local snowmobile clubs.

Though there is still some snow on some Brown County trails, clubs have opted to close them anyway to preserve what little snow base is left.

But as soon as enough snow falls, park management says clubs will be working to get the trails open.

“People just have to be patient, knowing that we're going to open up those trails as soon as we can. Those clubs have put in hundreds of hours to get them prepared. They want them opened up as soon as they can, but they also know that there's other factors that enter into their decisions,” said Doug Hartman, Brown County park management.
