MANITOWOC COUNTY - Ricky Bratz says he can't believe all this snow.
“Thought I was dreaming, when we got them ten to twelve inches, but it looks good,” said Bratz, Town of Liberty.
Bratz and his Ski-Doo are testing the newly groomed snowmobile trails in Manitowoc County.
“With 12 inches of snow, there's drifts five to six feet high. The groomers are going out, leveling the trails,” said Adam Backus, Manitowoc County Parks Department superintendent. “Taking out the huge snowbanks, filling in the ditches, and making them safe.”
Gavin was a storm that wouldn't give up. High winds challenged road crews trying to keep the highways clear.
“So the roads are going to be such where you're going to have a good area, and then within the next 150 feet a little bit of a treacherous way,” said Brian Glaeser, Manitowoc County Highway Department.
The sheriff says at the height of the storm, his deputies responded to 60 cars in the ditch.
“It was that busy that we could not keep up with the calls. We actually were quite a bit behind, and the deputies just ran call to call then basically,” said Manitowoc County Sheriff Robert Hermann.
Joe Coppens is shoveling again.
“I'm sore from yesterday,” said Coppens. “Ugly, heavy wet snow. The snow blower would do a good chunk of it, but there's still a little left you always have to pick up.”
Gavin is a storm that certainly left its mark.
“I've had enough of winter already in January,” said a laughing Coppens.
But until winter ends, others will enjoy the snow while they can.
“It's beautiful. It couldn't get any better,” said Bratz.
With temperatures expected to stay below freezing, it looks like all that snow will stick around for a while.
