Watch out for icy sidewalks

GREEN BAY - Today's dangerous weather situation was not new precipitation, but what's still on the ground.
    
If you still have ice on your property where people walk, you might want to consider not just the potential legal liability, but the risk for people walking.
   
Slick ice on sidewalks is a common sight in winter.
    
But if someone gets hurt in front of your house, it's more than likely your responsibility.
    
However, your homeowners insurance should have you covered.

“You don't have to add anything on, you do have your liability, but Med Pay on your policy would pay out first. And then if it does go above and beyond that, you do have your liability,” said Lori Frederick, Green Bay Insurance Center.

Municipalities are responsible for injuries only if the conditions have been present for more than three weeks.
    
But homeowners are not totally in the clear.

“The only time it actually falls back on the adjacent property owner is if they did something that specifically created the icy situation. So, for example, shoveling snow from their private property onto the sidewalk,” said Kail Decker, assistant city attorney, Green Bay.

And there are those like mail carriers whose jobs are impacted by icy conditions.

“If they don't clear the path to the mailbox, including the steps, the porches, the walkways, the street approach, it can make it really treacherous. And it also slows us down, which makes it a long day for a carrier,” said Sean Hargadon, USPS spokesperson.

And besides keeping the sidewalk clear of ice for the sake of others safety; you should keep it clear for you own sake. The next injury that you could prevent could be your own.
    
If you're renting, responsibility for clearing city owned sidewalks varies.
    
The lease agreement should clarify who's responsible.
