Working through Winter Storm Elijah

NORTHEAST WISCONSIN - Thursday morning, people needed scrapers to free their cars from a fresh layer of ice from Winter Storm Elijah. In afternoon snow, driving was tricky as well.

The morning began with school delays. At Beaumont Elementary School in Green Bay, buses and children were running behind.

“We walked, but we had to walk in the street because the sidewalks are slippery,” grandparent Eileen Ireland said.

“A little bit icy, a little bit slippery roads,” said Steve Graap of Green Bay. “I guess it's understandable. I don't think it's that bad. I understand being cautious.”

A spokesperson for the Green Bay Area Public School District told FOX 11 the warning for a two-hour delay was sent to parents at 6 a.m.

City crews used the time to their advantage.

“I did have our graders go and scrape in front of all the schools, and then we did have a truck go through and salt behind it,” Green Bay public works superintendent Tony Fietzer said. “Try and make it a little bit better for the buses that come in.”

Public works officials say the major streets were plowed, scraped, and salted. Graders worked the side streets.

“They're scraping the center out and trying to push it back to the curbs,” Fietzer said.

Many had to clear snow by hand.

“I thought it was going to be a lot tougher, but the warm weather, it made it a lot easier. Otherwise, yeah, we would be having a hard time out here,” said Shane Wheelock of Green Bay.

“I'm just clearing it because I understand there's more coming. I thought it would be a good idea to get this off before we add to it,” said Dave Dobry of Green Bay.

And in Oshkosh it did add up. Snow was falling after noon, and was making it a challenge for drivers trying to make it through Winter Storm Elijah.

“I have had about enough of it. It seems like we go one day, and by the time you can even get to the driveway, there's a couple more inches,” said Brett Hencley of Appleton.

That seemed to be a growing theme for some of the people we talked to today. They said they are already ready for spring. Just for the record, we still have 41 days of winter to go.
