RIVER FALLS, Wis. (CNN/WCCO) - Forget why the chicken crossed the road. People in one Wisconsin town are wondering why some cows crossed several roads.

A couple of cows broke free from their home at a farm in River Falls.

The local police went out to help corral the animals and make sure no one got hurt.

"She just ran down the road and literally had a mile on us before we were even out of the driveway. That was the last thing I saw, a cow sprinting as fast as a cow can move. She came off the trailer and just went berserk.  My son had the bright idea to actually call the River Falls Police to see if anyone had reported cows and they said, 'Oh yeah, they're all over,'" said farm owner Paul Haskins.

"It was just bizarre. I had lived in this town pretty much my whole life and I have never seen that before," said resident Nicole Pizza.

The cows suffered minor scrapes. One escaped heifer is due to give birth next year and the farmer is planning to name the calf "Chase."
