APPLETON - Business people are coming together in the Fox Valley to find a place to work on their own.
It's called coworking, and some say it's a growing trend.
One of the latest coworking spaces is the Avenue HQ in Appleton.
Financial consultant Mike Paschen says he tried to work from home.
"I have three kids, so, they can distract me pretty darn quick, if they're in the mood," said Paschen.
Pachen says he visited other places.
"The only option would be something like a coffee shop. That adds distraction as well too," said Paschen.
But for $75 a month, the Avenue HQ offers a business setting for freelancers, remote workers, and those just trying to get some work done.
Matthew Straub opened the coworking space Monday. He says an open house with free services this week attracted 75 people.
"A place that people have access to where they have coworkers again, they have that kind of social atmosphere," said Matthew Straub, Avenue HQ co-founder.
Kimberly Hottenstine is an environmental health consultant. She says collaboration between people is helpful.
"So you need help with a computer, chances are somebody's going to be able to help you. Working on a website design, chances are there's somebody that will be stopping in throughout the day that might be able to troubleshoot with you," said Kimberly Hottenstine, environmental consultant.
City leaders say the Avenue HQ is good for downtown development.
"This is a good stepping stone. To come together and look at downtown Appleton as a place to grow their business. And that could lead to a storefront, could lead to an office front," said Jennifer Stephany, executive director of Downtown Appleton, Inc.
"These places kind of become little hubs for exciting and entrepreneurial innovative activity in the area they're in," said Straub.
Coworkers we talked to say the office setting is as important to them as their laptop, their smartphone, or even their coffee.
"This affords the person the opportunity on a limited budget to be able to get solid workspace, to take care of business," said Paschen.
Statistics indicate there are more than 800 coworking spaces nationwide.
That includes Green Bay, Milwaukee, and Madison.
