OSHKOSH - The American flag that used to overlook UW-Oshkosh's administration building was retired Friday.
The flag flew atop Dempsey Hall. It was damaged in an April ice storm.
The campus joined the community in properly retiring the flag. Scouts helped host the ceremony.
"Part of the thing we do with Cub Scouts is try to teach patriotism and understanding how to care for a flag and it's a unique opportunity for a young man to get a chance to participate in a flag ceremony like this," said Justin Williams, Bay-Lakes Council Boy Scouts of America.
Before the flag is burned it is cut into pieces. The stripes are cut individually. The part containing the 50 stars is never cut.
