FOND DU LAC - A 43-year-old Mayville High School teacher is on paid leave after authorities say she had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student.
Mayville School District officials say Shannon Cardinal has been a teacher at the high school for more than 10 years, but was put on paid administrative leave Monday.
"Just absolutely devastating, unfortunate for all involved," said Patricia Antony, Mayville School District administrator.
According to the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office, most of the alleged sexual contact occurred at a home in Fond du Lac County. Mayville High School is located in Dodge County. The alleged contact between the 43-year-old teacher and the male student began when the student was 16. The first alleged incident happened last December. The latest alleged incident between Cardinal and the now 17-year-old occurred this month.
"The high school was contacted by a relative, who then contacted the local police in Mayville," said Lt. Cameron McGee with the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office.
School officials say all 400-plus students at Mayville High School were brought into the gymnasium and notified of the teacher's arrest at the end of the school day Wednesday. Antony says she believes none of the alleged incidents happened at the high school.
"There is no information that suggests that anything happened on school premises, inside the school building, or in the community of Mayville," said Antony.
Antony says Cardinal is on non-disciplinary paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
"I think it was fortunate we were able to speak to the students at the end of the day yesterday so that they had the evening to be prepared to come back to school ready to learn and put learning back into the focus of what we do because that's what we're really about."
