TOWN OF MENASHA - The Town of Menasha Police Department is releasing the name of the officer who was involved in a fatal shooting Friday night.
Police say Lieutenant Gary Cutler is a 17 year veteran of the department. Lt. Cutler is a patrol lieutenant and is also the department's firearms instructor. In addition, he serves as an assistant team leader on the Appleton Police Department SWAT team.
Wilson Lutz, 66, was shot and killed by Cutler at an apartment on W. Calumet St. in the Town of Menasha. Other officers say Lutz didn't drop his gun when ordered to do so and instead point it at officers. That's when only Lt. Cutler pulled the trigger, striking Lutz who later died. It's not known if Lutz's gun was loaded.
Lt. Cutler is off the job on paid leave.
