HILBERT - In Calumet County, an 11-year-old boy drowned Tuesday afternoon in a retention pond.
The incident happened on 12th St. in Hilbert.
Fire trucks and rescue personnel littered property on the outskirts of Hilbert Tuesday afternoon as crews searched for a missing boy.
Neighbors say they knew something was wrong when the sirens went off.
"I was leaving to go to Appleton with my mom and I had seen a first responder go around the corner and I assumed someone was injured in the trailer park, and then I heard a few more cops and an ambulance," explained Hilbert resident Jerin Vancuyk.
Authorities say Jacob Meronek and his 9-year-old brother were swimming when he went under water and did not come back up.
Eventually, some bystanders and the Calumet County dive team found the 11-year-old in around eight feet of water.
The boy was transported to the Calumet Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Flight for Life was called in to help on scene, as well as numerous other agencies.
"I didn't even know there was a pond back there. It's just a retention pond they build for flooding, I believe. I wouldn't go swimming in there," Vancuyk said.
Residents were surprised to hear the news. They say it's a tragedy for the small town.
"1,100 people in this town, not really that big of a town," said Spenser Thiel of Hilbert.
"It's a very quiet town, everyone knows each other, it's a good town to be in," Vancuyk said.
