TOWN OF OMRO - Winnebago County authorities say they have recovered a body from Lake Butte des Morts. Crews spent Tuesday afternoon searching for a skydiver who landed in the lake.
Another skydiver who also went into the water made it out safely this afternoon.
The incident happened in the Omro area off the Leonard Point Rd. boat launch.
Five-year-old Austin Wedemeier was looking out his window onto Lake Butte des Morts Tuesday when he saw something strange.
"I saw the guy sinking, then I saw a blue thing in the water, then I said, 'mom, what is that blue thing?' then I saw splashing," said Austin.
"I ran out there, tried to call to him, you could hear he was yelling for help and at that point I called 911," said Austin's mom, Jamie.
Winnebago County Sheriff John Matz told FOX 11 the "blue thing" the Wedemeiers saw was a parachute landing in the water.
"It was a tandem jump where the tandem master had a student attached," explained Matz.
According to Matz, the wind carried the tandem about a mile and a half off course from the launch site in Omro, where it landed in Lake Butte des Morts.
"Student and the jump master landed in the water, landed in Lake Butte des Morts. The student was able to swim to shore," said Matz.
Matz told us the student was not hurt, but the professional skydiver did not make it out of the lake.
Divers from Winnebago County and the Oshkosh Fire Department searched the water for more than four hours. They started at about 1:00 Tuesday afternoon and found the body at 5:23.
The department is not releasing anymore information at this time, until the victim's family is notified.
Jamie Wedemeier told us she hopes she never has to call 911 for something like this again.
"It's definitely not something we see every day, luckily. It's very scary," said Jamie.
The skydivers left from Skydive Adventure in Omro Tuesday afternoon. When we called the company, officials did not want to comment.
