The regional Girl Scouts office will sell part or all of several camping facilities as it focuses more on leadership development.
The Girl Scouts of the Northwestern Great Lakes plans to update program curriculum with more cutting-edge technology and education; high-level leadership, teambuilding & confidence programs; and digital-age topics and facilities.
To do this, it plans to make changes at it service centers and its camps. The list of proposals:
Appleton - Transition into Corporate Headquarters with retail and enhanced program space.
Eau Claire - Enhance program space; maintain retail and office space.
Green Bay - Sell/relocate or remodel in order to create Journey World/"Girltopia" program center with retail space.
Marquette - Downsize/relocate to more economical space and reallocate resources to program and service delivery throughout region; reevaluate in one year.
Schofield - Enhance program space; maintain retail and office space.
Wis Rapids - Repurpose for additional program space.
Birch Trails - KEEP: (Sell 80 of 360 acres); enhance to be premier Resident Camp
Blueberry Knoll - SELL: Reallocate proceeds to enhance other properties
Cuesta (Bailey's Harbor) - KEEP: (Sell 30 of 57 acres); focus as Troop Camp/destination location
Del O'Claire - Further examine unique factors/contingencies before making final decision
Hy Da Way - SELL: Redistribute assets to enhance/upgrade other properties
Ishnala (Pound) - SELL: Redistribute assets to enhance/upgrade other properties
Nawakwa - KEEP: (Sell 80 of 185 acres); refocus as Day and Troop Camp facility
Nesbit Continue Rental as needed
Pow Low - KEEP: (Sell 40 of 85 acres); reinvest to enhance the remaining property
Sacajawea - KEEP: (Sell 20 of 61 acres); focus as Day and Troop Camp facility
Winnecomac (Kaukauna) - KEEP: Focus as Day and Troop Camp facility; add year-round capability
"While we understand that some friends and members may be disappointed by these conclusions, we ask all stakeholders to keep in mind that these difficult decisions will strengthen Girl Scouting by reallocating resources for a more contemporary and efficient leadership program. These actions will also allow GSNWGL to develop a greater presence in more communities and make our council more adaptable to the changing needs and interests of those we serve," the council said in a news release.
The GSNWGL serves nearly 20,000 girls in 58 counties across northern Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula.
