BRUSSELS - A 33-year-old woman has been arrested after her infant daughter died in Door County.
Sheriff Terry Vogel says officials were called to a home on School Road in Brussels for a report of a pulseless, non-breathing 8½-month-old girl just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
Jail records show Melissa Martinez was arrested for child neglect which resulted in death.
No formal charges have been filed yet.
Records also indicate alcohol was present when Martinez was taken into custody.
Authorities are not saying how the young girl died. They also would not say whether she was pronounced dead at the scene.
"I think it's difficult for any officer to deal with this type of situation," said Jim Valley, an investigator with the Door County Sheriff's Department. "I think it's difficult for the public to also know that this happened in the community, dealing with a child this young."
The investigation is ongoing.
A formal press conference will be held Friday at 9 a.m. at the justice center in Sturgeon Bay.
