KEWAUNEE - A Kewaunee County dairy farm is planning to add about 1,600 head of cattle to its operation.
The state Department of Natural Resources says Pagel's Ponderosa LLC submitted plans for the expansion last Thursday. Plans call for a new barn to be built and the farm to expand from 4,648 milking cows to 5,800 milking cows and 430 large heifers. The DNR says it will review the plans for the manure transfer line for the proposed barn.
According to the DNR, Pagel's will have more than the required 180 days of manure storage capability and enough acreage in its nutrient management plan to handle the additional waste. The agency also says it has reviewed increased water usage and possible impact to wetlands. Based on that review, the DNR says no adverse environmental impacts are anticipated and an environmental assessment is not required.
