The mother of a Kiel soldier who was killed in the 2009 Fort Hood shootings says she believes the convicted shooter is getting what he deserves.
Jeri Krueger spoke to FOX 11 by phone after the sentencing, and shared her reaction.
"I am ecstatic. I'm very happy about the verdict. I think it's what he deserves. I know a lot of people think that's what he wanted but in all reality, you can't be a martyr when you don't have anything you deserve," said Krueger.
Her daughter, Staff Sergeant Amy Krueger died in the shooting at Fort Hood, Texas.
Krueger says it was very emotional for her in the courtoom on Wednesday, learning that Army Major Nadal Hisan would die for his crimes.
"Tears welled in my eyes, and when I walked out, I wanted to cry and it was a cry of relief."
Outside of the courtroom more surviving family members shared their feelings. Some called Hasan an "unrepented murderer." Others expressed happiness the process had finally come to an end.
"This has been a very long and exhausting process. We are tired, we are hurt, but we are resolved that justice has been served," said surviving family member, Keeley Vanacker.
Krueger says she is flying back home Wednesday night to reunite with family and friends in Kiel. She says when they're all together, they'll do more grieving.
