SHAWANO - A new medical center broke ground Thursday in Shawano with a little help from the community.
The new ThedaCare Medical Center will be built on County B and Highway 22. It will join three facilities into one medical campus.
Children were invited to help out at the groundbreaking ceremony. They even got to crawl behind the wheel of some of the machinery.
Hospital officials say the new center will be a positive change in the community's care.
"It's gonna be one-stop shopping, coordinated care. It will be absolutely be one campus. People will not see it as a hospital stuck on the side of a clinic," said Dorothy Erdmann, CEO of Shawano Medical Center.
Construction hasn't started yet. It will begin next month.
The center will replace the existing Shawano Medical Center and is expected to open in 2015.
