SHEBOYGAN COUNTY - They may look similar, but all cows are definitely not the same.Just ask Tom Kestell.
"You never plan on setting a world record," Kestell said as heshowed us his award-winning Holstein.
The new record for milk production was set by this big cow witha big name: Ever-Green-View My 1326-ET. In the last year, My 1326produced 72,170 pounds of milk. That beat the old record of 67,914pounds which was set by a cow from Marathon County.
How much milk is that? The cow produced an average of 23 gallonsof milk every single day for an entire year. The average cowproduces just seven gallons a day. But the milk from My 1326doesn't stay milk, it is made into cheese. She produced enough milkto make 7,217 pounds of cheeses. That's enough for 115,472cheeseburgers.
"Our job is to take care of them," Kestell said. "I didn't giveany milk at all, she did. So our job is to provide the environmentwhere she can reach her full potential and the rest is up toher."
My 1326 comes from a long line of big producers. Syntheticbovine growth hormone was also used to help boost her production byabout 10-percent.
"It affected things a little bit but she's gone far above andbeyond that," said Lindsey Worden from the Holstein AssociationUSA. "I will say that bovine growth hormone is a common industrymanagement tool."
"It's to supplement their system to try and make them moreefficient," Kestell said. He also said cows like My 1326 are bredto milk.
"Some people think high producing cows are stressed out andstuff," Kestell said. "There's really nothing farther from thetruth. If they were stressed out they wouldn't make those bigrecords."
More records could be in the cow's future. But first, she'll beused for breeding so she can pass on the family tradition. My 1326is the 5th generation cow to produce more than 50,000 pounds ofmilk in a year. She is the third cow in her family to be named theTop Performer in Wisconsin.
