TOWN OF HOLLAND - Sheboygan County officials have suspended the water search andrecovery effort for a missing Illinois girl in Lake Michigan.
The sheriff’s department said it would reconsider theefforts if new information is discovered. Crews are continuing tosearch the beach area.
Nine-year-old Sofia Khan was vacationing with her family ineastern Wisconsin when the girl drifted away from shore in a kayakWednesday afternoon north of Cedar Grove. Authorities say she wasnot wearing a life jacket.
Sheboygan County sheriff's officials say the girl's father triedto swim out to the kayak, but strong winds pushed it farther andfaster than he could swim.
Capt. David Adams says a man from a nearby cottage got into hiscanoe and paddled out to the kayak, but found it empty. The man'scanoe capsized and he had to be rescued by Coast Guard personnelarriving at the scene.
Adams says the girl's family is from the Chicago area.
