SEYMOUR - If you know Tom Duffey, don't worry. He is not broke or strandedin London. Though, a message sent from his e-mail account thismorning says otherwise.
"The best they can tell me is someone guessed my password," saidDuffey, who lives in Seymour.
He thinks the e-mail was sent to the nearly 500 people on hiscontact list. Those who wrote back, even got a response from thehacker, requesting them to wire $2,500 overseas to help Duffey. Sofar, he doesn't think anyone has actually sent the funds.
"I hope not because they're going to want it back from me,"laughed Duffey.
Unlike other e-mail phishing scams, this one will come from thee-mail account of a known friend or relative. The scammer is evenresponding to reply e-mails.
"They'll use your e-mail to get out the initial message and thenwhen you reply, they'll put in some kind of code to where you'rereplying directly to them and not to the original person," saidWill Pearson, an officer with Seymour Police Department.
Pearson said this scam starts with a hacker stealing a users'contacts list. He says many of the problems are with Gmail andYahoo! accounts.
"The more mainstream accounts are more at risk because they'rejust more accessible," said Pearson.
Duffey has had the same Yahoo! e-mail address and password formore than a decade. The internet company is now working with him toget a new account.
"The lady asked me, when's the last time I changed my password?I said about 14 years ago," said Duffey.
Authorities say a better idea is to change it every month ortwo.
