OSHKOSH - The 2013 sturgeon season has ended, with spearers finishing well short of the caps on Lake Winnebago.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says 12 fish were harvested from Winnebago on Sunday, the final day of the season. That brought the 2013 total of sturgeon speared on Lake Winnebago to 306, and 567 total including the numbers from the Upriver Lakes.
The total of 567 is one more fish than 2012, when 566 total sturgeon were registered in the system.
The DNR says 39 fish that weighed more than 100 pounds were harvested this season. That includes 9.5% of the fish speared on Lake Winnebago, a new record according to the DNR.
Final totals on Lake Winnebago for the 2013 season were: 30 juvenile females (cap of 320), 131 adult females (cap of 745) and 145 males (cap of 960). Spearers on the Upriver Lakes tripped the cap trigger for adult females earlier in the month.
