GREEN BAY - The Green Bay Packers have signed free-agent running back Cedric Benson.
The team announced the move Sunday afternoon.
Benson spent the past four seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and rushed for 1,000-plus yards in each of the last three seasons. Last year for the Bengals, Benson rushed for 1,067 yards on 273 carries with six touchdowns.
The Packers released tight end Eric Lair to make room for Benson on the 90-man roster. Lair signed with the Packers as a non-drafted free agent in May but injured his knee during training camp.
Benson will be thrown in to the mix at running back with James Starks, Alex Green and Brandon Saine. Starks suffered a turf toe injury during a pre-season game against San Diego on Thursday. He is expected to miss at least a week.
