NEW LONDON - New London's Trinity Lutheran Church was left in ruins after 110 mile per hour winds ripped through the area early Wednesday morning.
"This side of the building is our fellowship hall. That's all caved in on itself. Our sanctuary roof which is on the far-end of the building has a big gaping hole in it," explained Rev. Bil Sutlief
Neighbors say it was quite the storm.
"About 12:30 it woke me right up, knocked me out of bed. When the trees hit the house, it just shook the whole house. Nobody was hurt, that's the main thing," explained Frank Dobbert of New London. "All this stuff can be replaced."
National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Last surveyed the storm's path. The agency confirmed an EF-2 tornado hit in the New London area.
"We have extensive damage and in particular to the church here," Last said.
The National Weather Service also reported the same storm produced an EF-1 tornado in the Appleton area. That storm damaged homes and power lines near the Northland Mall.
Damage from an EF-1 tornado was also confirmed along Highway 57 near the Brown County / Calumet County border.
The National Weather Service says it is looking at evidence that the two EF-1 tornadoes may actually be just one tornado.
The storm brought down large transmission lines, which are expected to withstand around 100 mph winds.
"The strong winds just caused them to crumble with certainly some significant power outages to the area," Last said.
Downed lines crossed over the highway, closing that portion of the road. Crews were expected to work on those lines through the night.
ATC officials hoped everything would be back up and running by Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service plans to survey storm damage in the Freedom and Wrightstown areas Thursday morning.
Officials say they're going to try to determine whether tornadoes caused that damage.
