Here's What You Need: Milk; Food Coloring; Q-tip; Dish Soap; a dinner plate
Here's What You Do: Pour milk onto the dinner plate so that the plate is covered with the milk. Next squeeze one to two drops of food coloring onto the milk, close to each other but not touching. Now you're ready for the big finish...take the q-tip and dip it in the dish soap then place the Q-tip in the middle of the plate and drops of food coloring. Watch the color explosion and be awed.
Why It Works: Milk is made up mostly of water but also has other things in it such as protein and fat. The chemistry of the dish soap is such that it weakens the chemical bonds that hold those proteins and fats in the solution and tries to attach to those molecules. When you place the Q-tip in the milk, the dish soap molecules are chasing the fat molecules around to try to bond with them. The food coloring is showing this race around the plate vividly with bursts of color.
My rating: A 4 and a half out of 5 beaker rating from me. Very cool experiment with lots of "wow" factor. You can also do this with different types of milk and other liquids to make a neat science fair experiment.
