SHERWOOD - It's been a tough few weeks for a Calumet County family. In two separate incidents, vehicles have hit three of the family's horses.
No people were injured, but two of the horses died and one is still recovering.
Three weeks ago, a horse lover's worst nightmare became a reality for Carl Holzschuh. Just down the road, outside his son's house, the first incident happened when two of his horses were hit in the middle of Highway 55.
“I just couldn't believe it, in disbelief,” said Holzschuh.
The gate the horses were supposed to be behind was wide open.
“It's a chain with a snap on it, so there's no way it would open up,” said Holzschuh.
One week later, another open gate, this time at Holzschuh's house. Another horse had to be put down after being hit on Highway 55.
“When that happened, I was just devastated,” said Holzschuh. “It was just quite a shock. How could that happen again?”
In all, three vehicles were damaged, two horses died, one was hurt, and medical bills keep piling up for the Holzschuh family.
“And it turned out I ended up having a stress attack and ended up going to the hospital on top of it,” said Holzschuh. “So I'm glad this week is going better.”
The Calumet County Sheriff's Department is now investigating, offering a reward for any tip which leads to an arrest.
“I have no idea, it just boggles my mind also,” said Holzschuh. “I've gone through my mind all the possibilities and I don't have a clue why.”
Holzschuh's farm is now in lockdown mode. He says it's all his family can do, besides hope it doesn't happen again.
“It isn't about the money,” said Holzschuh. “I'd just as soon have my horses back.”
